Food for thought
Tarc: Step in, step out or step far far away?
Since the recent highlights on the recent near rape case, our college has once again emerged on the negative side of the media limelight. And yeah, this is the second time this year. The first being the case of a murdered accounting student.
Haih.
Thus, much thought and discussion had been going on everywhere regarding the latest turn of affairs. And of course, other private colleges are making use of the opportunity to cash in la.
When I was going on my usual routine of stalking people's blogs recently, a came across an ex tarcian who had kept ranting on and on about the negative prospects of the college to the point of being.... bias. For goodness sake, it was as if thats one of the few things she blogged about- how the college sucks.
Dont get me wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Correct or wrong as it might be. As I am with mine. We are after all proud owners of a mouth and a voice box right? So let me make full use of my privileges and state MY point here.
In my opinion, nothing is really rotten to the root. We all have our good sides and bad sides, being inperfect beings as we are. What matters is which side of our character do we choose to project more on? To develop? That itself makes all the difference in the world.
Same thing applies to tarc. It is not perfect. Yet, it is not as horrible as certain individuals would like to paint it as.
This is my opinion about tar college. Unbias and very VERY long.
The Language
Bananas be wary. Tarc main language is mandarin. Most of us speak mandarin 24/7, not counting the time we spend answering questions in class. No matter how the officials try to make us speak english, we remain stubborn and decide that mandarin is lingua-franca here.
heck,my ex housemate told me they tried FINING students several years back in a desparate attempt to get them to speak english. But to no avail
Thus, pure bananas will form clans of their own and run around stubbornly speaking english while half bananas will blend in unassumingly. Thus the population of bananas in tarc is hard to detect. However, there has been observation that there has been a steady increase in the population these few years. (gosh, macam biology)
So majority of students here have a poor command of the language. Many employers are pissed cause some students cant seem to string a sentence together. Which is rather sad.
Dont get me wrong. Mandarin is good, it is our root. rhymes But we need to face the fact that most things are conducted in english, with it being the lingua franca and all, and being skilled in one language just doesnt cut it anymore.
The Fee
The thing that attacts most people to the college is of course, the fee. Which is indisputedly known as the most affordable some called it 'cheap'. Offensive? You decide While most college fees cost well over 30k, you pay much more less here. Thanks to MCA. Which is probably why there are so many people here. around 700 in my course ONLY. IN MY YEAR. So you do the maths.
The Population
Its crowded here. REALLY crowded. A lecturer can talk to almost 400 people at a time in certain courses. So yeah, most lecturers cant remember their students faces apatah their names. Which some argue that students here lack personal attention of lecturers. In any case, there are always consultation hours which we can go to when we are desparate for help.
Which hardly anyone goes to, cause everyone is either too lazy or just too paiseh -.-
The Lecturers
Lecturers come in all shapes and sizes, form and shapes, attitudes and personality. I dont really have much problems with the lecturers except for some junior lecturers who cant pronounce some words well and have grammar problems. pet peeve Thankfully, most of the lecturers speak good english.
The funniest mispronounciation by a lecturer has got to be I our Intro to Accounting lecturer and his tofu debts (doubtful debts) and char siew (charge YOU)interest.
Hilarious! My classmates and I were all lusting for char siew and tofu rice by the end of the lecture.
Business studies lecturers are fine. But school of social science and humanities lecturers are pretty lazy. I know they sometimes can end a lecture an hour early. Which is weird. Can SSSH students care to elaborate?
The Students Attitude
Most students dont have attitude issues here. Which is probably one of the best things about students here-they are humble. All being from working class families, people here dont act like spoil brats. So all the pretence of being rich and the fake accent do not apply here. People dont need to strut around in the latest high fashion to be accepted. We just accept people as they are, pasar malam or high fashion. And generally, people are more nicer, helpful and less sombong.
Lecturers have commented on this before saying that this is the best thing about the students here. She told us one lecturer was insulted about her pay (being less then expense for a DOG?) when she was teaching somewhere else.. hmm
The Security
This I have nothing good to say about. The area nearby is dangerous and I am scared of being at home alone at night. There are frequent occurance of snatch thefts, petty theft, and dirty old men who target all girls houses. This applies in the tbr, wangsa and genting klang area. MU is safe for the meantime.
The police as usual, adopts the malaysian culture of waiting for something to happen before taking action. Which is saddening cause their dedication lasts several weeks the most. Syabas! I know malaysia lacks police, but surely ronda around once in awhile wont hurt?
Behold, the semangat hangat-hangat tahi ayam mata mata! So happens the balai polis bergerak was parked REALLY near my new house several days ago.. hmm
Tarc's motto: Quality and affordable education
Quality? Its okay. Not super but not totally terrible.
Affordable? damn right it is.
What are we lacking? Security. We students are always worried about each other's safety. We try not to walk alone, even in the daytime. Well, cause snatch theives even operate in broad daylight. My classmate got robbed along the street I lived in after visiting me at home.Whether you are alone or not sometimes. And sometimes, people do get hurt.
So yeah, we end up being more caring people and all.. but still, if the security isnt going to be tightened in the surrounding areas, many a student will have to think twice before stepping into the bursary.
Despite all the bad publicity, some students still stepped in
And some students have stepped out in fear and perhaps disappointment
While I have heard many have stepped far far away this year, opting to go to other institutions.
I just think we need to step carefully.

kudos, i seconded your unbiased posting on our college.
i agreed that the most of the students speak Mandarin in the college, but this kinda thingy happens in many other colleges too, such as Metropolitan and Inti, and places where ex-smjk students dominate.
yea, there are many many students, but the kl campus is big enough to accommodates - 186-arce (almost twice the size of NIC in Nilai - 105-acre). accounting cources is the most crowded course in Tarc, currently with about 800 students going to Diploma second year this coming semester. but there are also courses with less than 100 students, such as HR and Econs. My course (FI) has 92 students, divided into 3 tutorial groups, and most of my tutors has no problem recognizing their own students.
generally, most of the lecturers are well-qualified. i have encountered some exceptionally good lecturers (such as Pearly from Nottingham Uni), and also some worst than average lecturers with poor English (such as BigMc from MMU).
it's true that many of the students here are humble and nice. but we really need a safer out-campus. (the campus is usually safe, minus that black sheep!)
two-cent from Daniel. :)
haha... i remembered char sieu interest n tofu debt.
I remembered my 1st impression of TARC is nt so good. Especially the food. :P
Wat i love TARC now is the students attitude. (Minus the bad apples) Kudos 2 TARCians. I jz hate those rich spoiled kids.
