50 years of.... what?
In a burst of pure Malaysian semangat yesterday, me, my housemates and some ex-housemates headed off to celebrate Merdeka in the golden triangle.
Before that, our wallets got slaughtered by Planet Hollywood(the Lot 10 one). Very expensive la wei wtf. Before going in, please make sure you have at least 50 bucks in your pocket or face the risk of washing dishes through the night =(
But hey, the food was great! The deco was very interesting and pretty. For the occasion, they dressed the place in colors of red and blue. Even the food came with little Jalur Gemilangs! very merdeka-ish. Pity it wasnt the night when Jacklyn Victor was performing. And I had my first taste of bloody mary!
Supposed to share this with my roommate, but she got quite sick of the smell after a few sips. I ended up drinking the whole thing. My opinion? Bloody Mary= Bloody hell. It tastes like tomato juice spinkled with too much salt. And the celery isnt helping at all.
Note to myself: Get drunk on Kopi peng, which is cheaper and delicious. No more Bloody disgusting Mary for me.
The girls. Cause the guys went shopping. Wtf.
Mickey only has four fingers. Very very distubing la wei.
Pardon the stupid picture. But this mickey has five fingers. Thank goodness.
After that, we initially wanted to countdown at KLCC. Unfortunately, we were told that the celebrations at KLCC were banned. Great! So we decided to walk from KLCC to dataran Merdeka
You know how far is KLCC from Dataran merdeka?
.......
..........
Thank god we managed to catch a last minute bus.
But we didnt reach there in time. So we got as far as Masjid Jamek and stopped there to watch.
We waited.
Counting the time.
And heard the national anthem played.
Then......
nothing happened.
Where are the fireworks?
Apparantly, it is Malaysian culture to be late. This applies even to fireworks now. The fireworks were late an hour.
Madness. An hour!. Most people left after 20 minutes with extremely bengang faces.
Dont say la,the lrt uncle was also pissing mad, giving out announcements through his loud hailer like:
"Semua bunga api dah pergi ke Putrajaya"
"Semua boleh balik tengok bunga api secara siaran tertungga"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH! The tourists just looked puzzled and started complaining in their own language. Probably discussing how to sue tourism malaysia for the information error I think.
But thank goodness we were still around the area at that time and managed to watch it. Why? Cause we had this to amuse ourselves and some tourists:
My new hairstyle makes it seem I have bits of cotton candy stuck on my hair. Poyo betul semua attack me.
After that, before heading home, we noticed something very distubing. Half the people celebrating merdeka were pendatang asings, another quarter are mat rempits and another quarter were normal people like you and me.
Disturbing or not? KLCC was flooded with all the scary indonesian workers.
And KL center was like this:
Get what I mean? Disturbing or not?
So....
Posers. Meet the handbag theif and penggangur.
Totally irrelevant, but...
Taking pictures in the middle of the road cause we cant do that normally without risking our lives.
Squatting in the middle of the road.
Anyway, about weird dressing, we did see a chinese auntie wearing this:
Sorry for the disturbing picture, but the handbag theif has gone seductively sissy. Mei kay the photographer suggested him to bite his fingers.
I remember they asked us a question during the star brats sleepover at muzium negara two years back
"what does freedom mean to you?"
I remembered answering something very stupid, which ironically I forgot.
I think I have a better answer now.
Yesterday, while waiting for the fireworks, I glaced up at weng yan's bunch of baloons which we stole from planet hollywood and came to a conclusion.
Freedom in Malaysia is like a helium filled balloon. Like a balloon tied to a string, we can actually have a taste of freedom. Yet the strings hold us back as we strive to reach greater heights. Like us,the balloon is still floating lower than the actual height it can reach.
Yet, if the balloon is allowed to float too high,it will burst. Cause too much freedom is devastating to any individual. We need to have strings attached to keep us grounded. Floaty people are a nuisance anyway.
What we need is not total freedom. We need longer strings.

hahah! bloody mary is actually a cure for hangover. aiyah.. next time get vodka lime!
i dont know what happened to the fireworks this year. usually i can see them from my balcony, but there was none this year. fuck. who stole all the mercun!!?!
yeah.. it is very disturbing. the main reason why i chose not to celebrate merdeka in KL.
and agree.. we need longer strings. and not politicians who'll tell us to leave the country when there is something that we are not happy about.
"floaty people" HAHAHAHA! i will always remember that expression.
i like what you said about freedom what with the balloon and string. you're right. what we need is a longer string. it seems now, our freedom is superficial.
we THINK we have it, but when you look clearly, we don't. not much anyway. there are so many things we cannot do because of circumstances we cannot change. if we were balloons, we;d be deflated ones.
excuse my pessimism, 50th merdeka made me sad and i dont know why
